HC Melbourne and Melbourne Cobras Reveal Initial 2026 Squads

Hockey Victoria's two Hockey One franchises have taken another major step towards the 2026 season, with both HC Melbourne and the Melbourne Cobras unveiling their initial men's and women's squads.

HC Melbourne enters the season looking to build on another outstanding campaign. The men's squad, fresh off back-to-back Hockey One championships, returns with a formidable core led by six Kookaburras. Dutch international Daan Smits is back after playing a pivotal role in last year's title success, while former captain Damon Steffens returns from overseas to bolster an already impressive defensive unit as the club sets its sights on an unprecedented third consecutive title.

The women's squad is equally well placed after finishing runners-up in 2025. Reigning Hockey One MVP and Hockeyroos star Greta Hayes headlines an exciting list of additions, joined by American international Ashley Hoffman and Argentine midfielder Lourdes Perez Iturraspe. Combined with a strong returning core, HC Melbourne will once again be among the competition's leading contenders.

Meanwhile, the Melbourne Cobras continue to build excitement ahead of their inaugural Hockey One campaign. Following months of scouting, trials and recruitment, the club has assembled strong initial squads featuring a blend of international stars, experienced Hockey One campaigners and emerging talent.

The Cobras men's squad is led by former Hockey India great Gurjant Singh, former Kookaburra Jake Whetton and current Hockey India midfielder Raheel Mouseen. They are joined by experienced Hockey One players Peter Scott and Doug Buckley, alongside recruits from across the league including Ben Rennie (TAS), Trent Symss (ADL) and Hugh Snowden (ADL), giving the club a wealth of experience ahead of its first season.

The women's squad also boasts an impressive international flavour, with Indian international Udita Duhan and Hockeyroo Claire Colwill headlining the list. Former India U21 star Kanika Siwach and former Argentine international Delfina Thome further strengthen the side, while Ella Carr arrives from NSW Pride. Former HC Melbourne players Zara and Gracie Geddis make the move across to the Cobras, with experienced leader Penny Squibb adding further quality and leadership.

With two exciting Victorian teams preparing for the season ahead, anticipation is building for another thrilling Hockey One campaign. Final squads will be confirmed in early September before both clubs begin their 2026 journeys in October.
