A look back on Week 4 of the Indoor Club Championships

Week 4 of the Indoor Club Championships occurred last weekend with the Under 16 Girls & Boys.
Under 16 Girls
There was a total of 6 teams in the U16 Girls ICC this year.19 matches played across the weekend at the SNHC Parkville and Monash University, with 108 goals scored, and the leading goal scorer going to Violet Avotins from Brunswick Hockey Club.
Each team got the chance the play each other in Pool A for a total of 5 matches, with the top 4 teams from Pool A progressing into the Semi-Final matches. It was Waverley Hockey Club v KBH Brumbies Hockey Club in SF1 and Toorak East Malvern Hockey Club v Brunswick Hockey Club in SF2.
In SF1, undefeated Waverley Hockey Club took on fourth place KBH Brumbies Hockey Club. It was a back-and-forth contest in the first half, seeing Waverley hold a 1-0 lead at half-time. But a second half goal by KBH’s Nicole Anderson put them level leading into the end of the match. The game would end how it started with a close match up seeing the final score ending 1-1 and Waverley Hockey Club moving into the Grand Final.
In SF2, Toorak East Malvern Hockey Club and Brunswick Hockey Club went head-to-head to determine the second grand final contestant. Brunswick got off to a brilliant start, going up 1-0 in the early moments of the game. TEM’s would not go down without a fight seeing Ella Dunkley score two goals and Pippa Leishman scoring one to close out the match 3-1!
Going into the Grand Final, Waverley Hockey Club and Toorak East Malvern Hockey Club faced off in the regular rounds seeing a very dominate 8-0 win for Waverley Hockey Club. This time around TEM knew they were in for a fierce game! Waverley showed their class within the early stages of the match going up 2-0. Come half time Waverley were proving too strong and were leading by 4 goals to nil. Tem would not give up without a fight seeing Ebony Giles score withing the first 5 minutes of the second half. Waverly would end up closing the match with Aaliayah Koelmeyer scoring her second of the match off a penalty corner. Waverley Hockey Club would go on to win the match 5-1 and were crowned 2026 U16 Girls Indoor Club Champions.

Under 16 Boys
There was a total of 22 matches played across the three days at SNHC Parkville and Monash University with 168 goals scored, with the leading goal scorer going to Keenan Trinidade from Mentone Hockey Club, with 12 goals.
In the original pool matches, Pool A would play 4 round matches whilst Pool B played a total of 3 round matches. The top 2 from each pool then progressed into Semi Finals, and the remaining teams progressed into Crossover matches for the next set of Pool matches to determine final classification matches.
In the semi-finals it ended up being Mentone Hockey Club defeating Waverley Hockey Club 4-2 to progress to the Grand Final; and Hawthorn Hockey Club win over Brunswick Hockey Club by the same scoreline.
In the 3rd place play-off, another fantastic show of skill saw both teams score but Waverley just in front 3-1. A second had masterclass saw Brunswick’s Jonathan Avotins score on a penalty corner and William Tracy score his first of the match also of a penalty corner. In the final three minutes Marcus Chong from Waverley scored a penalty corner thinking that would be the end of the match but William Tracy said they game wasn’t over yet scoring an amazing goal within the final 90 seconds. The game would end a 4 all draw meaning both clubs shared third place!
The Grand Final showdown saw Mentone Hockey Club take on a strong looking Hawthorn Hockey Club in what would be one of the most thrilling ICC matches of the weekend. A very close contest saw Hawthorn’s Griffin Bouman open the scoring with 8 minutes left in the first half. Hawthorn would then go onto score the greatest goal in Under 16 ICC history with Rory Thorpe scoring an impossible baseline goal placed perfecting just above the backboard off the right post! Mentone would not give up with a clinical finish by Keenan Trinidade of a penalty corner seeing the score become 2-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Rory Thorpe from Hawthorn would end up calling game with a wrong side penalty corner going top left that no goalkeeper or defender would save! Hawthorn Hockey Club would end up becoming the 2026 U16 Boys Indoor Club Champions wining 3-1.
