Hockeyroos out of World Cup race

Australia’s World Cup dreams have come to an end after losing to Germany 1-0 today in Argentina.

Germany 1 Hockeyroos 0

Goals – Ger Bachmann 43m PC

Australia’s World Cup dreams have come to an end after losing to Germany 1-0 today in Argentina.

The Hockeyroos needed to win today to finish second in their pool and qualify for the semi finals. They will now play Korea for fifth place on Friday.

Things began disastrously for the Hockeyroos when Germany found the back of the net after only two minutes. However after Australia used their video referral the goal was disallowed, ensuring the scores remained nil all.

Despite only needing a draw to progress to the semi finals, Germany started the more aggressive team, seemingly looking for an early goal to mount the pressure on Australia.

Thanks to some brilliant efforts in defence from Nicole Arrold, Australia eventually steadied and began to produce some circle penetrations. However they were unable to generate any legitimate shots on goal thanks to Germany’s solid defence.

Germany continued to push for their opening goal, with Hockeyroos goalkeeper Rachael Lynch called on several times to make some great saves.

Turning defence into attack, the Hockeyroos worked their way on top in the final 10 minutes of the half, controlling the play and beginning to apply some pressure of their own around goal. Their best chance of the half came with Casey Eastham crossed the ball from the baseline, however no one was there to receive it and Germany were given a let off.

Despite controlling the final minutes the Hockeyroos were unable to produce a goal, with the scores remained tied as the teams entered half time.

Germany started the second half in the same fashion as they did the first, putting the Australian defence under pressure as they searched for the first goal of the game.

When Kate Hollywood was sent from the field for two minutes after receiving a green card Germany took full advantage, drawing a penalty corner which was converted by Tina Bachmann to give them the crucial lead.

With plenty of time still left on the clock the Hockeyroos gave it their all in search of the two goals they would need to qualify them for the semi finals. Despite their brave efforts and generating two penalty corners in the last 15 minutes, they were unable to do so and will miss the opportunity to play Argentina in the semi finals on Thursday.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said that while he is obviously disappointed with the way his team played today, the Hockeyroos must now turn their attention to improving for the 2012 London Olympics.

“Obviously we are disappointed; not only in the result but in the way we played. In our view we didn’t play to our potential today, we turned the ball over far too easily in the middle of the field and we have a fair bit of work between now and London, so we look forward to that. Obviously we have the game against Korea to get over first, and then we have the Commonwealth Games but it’s now about finding a group for London and making sure we have the players with the ability and the physical capacity to play these types of games at this type of tournament,” said Murray.

Hockeyroos captain Madonna Blyth said Australia’s inability to score was the most disappointing factor from the match.

“We are obviously very disappointed that we couldn’t score, we did make a few chances but I think that our awareness in the circle both in attack in defence let us down. We created a few more opportunities in the second half and a few more corners but we didn’t have too many shots that really worried them. That is something that we have really worked on so to not do it tonight in such a big match was disappointing,” said Blyth.

Victorian Hockeyroo, Rachael Lynch, reports from Argentina:

Tonight, sadly, we went down to Germany 1-0 which has put us out of finals contention. It was a really tough match and unfortunately we were outclassed by the rough yet determined Germans.

Defensively I think we did well with only one slip up but in the end we needed to win and we couldn't put the ball in the net. It is very disappointing as we have done so well here and we all feel like we have progressed as a group but couldn't come through with the goods when it mattered.

We now have two days off then play Korea for 5th place. A win will help us later on with tournaments and maybe rankings but I think for now we will all just reflect and be sad for a little bit that we have missed out on the world cup finals. It would have been great to play against the Argies and their home crowd too but its not be.

I hope all is well back home

Rach

Hockeyroos still in World Cup hunt after defeating New Zealand

The Hockeyroos have kept their World Cup dreams alive by defeating New Zealand 4-1 in Argentina.

Hockeyroos still in World Cup hunt after defeating New Zealand

06 September 2010

Hockeyroos 4 New Zealand 1 (1-1 half time)

Goals – NZ Forgesson 5m FG, Aus McGurk 12m PC, Aus Nelson 57m FG/ 65m FG, Liddelow 63m FG

The Hockeyroos have kept their World Cup dreams alive by defeating New Zealand 4-1 in Argentina.

Entering the match needing at least a draw to remain in contention for a semi finals berth, the Hockeyroos were outplayed in the first half but gradually worked on top after half time to score four unanswered goals.

With the Netherlands already assured a spot in the semi finals, Australia and Germany will fight it out for the second and final spot in the pool for a chance to play in the semis when they face each other in the final round match on Tuesday 7 September.

A draw will see Germany advannce due to them having a one goal better goal difference.

Against New Zealand, the Hockeyroos were under pressure from the opening stages of the game, with New Zealand making the dream start by catching Australia off guard with a series of quick passes to score the first goal at the five minute mark.

After an even ten minutes the Hockeyroos found their equaliser, executing a well worked penalty corner where Nicole Arrold passed to Kobie McGurk who beat the keeper to give the Hockeyroos some momentum.

However there is no doubt that the first half belonged to New Zealand, with the world number 7 team taking advantage of numerous passing errors by the Hockeyroos.

Looking extremely dangerous near goal, they successfully stretched the Australian defence and worked the ball into the circle with speed and precision. If not for some individual defensive errors to the likes of Nicole Arrold, Kobie McGurk and Kim Walker the Hockeyroos could have easily found themselves trailing at half time.

Australia took to the pitch with a new focus after half time, addressing their passing issues and their inability to close New Zealand’s space.

It almost paid off immediately when Madonna Blyth received the ball in the circle, however pressure from the New Zealand defence ensured the shot wasn’t accurate.

Only minutes later the same opportunity presented itself again, with this time Ashleigh Nelson left unmarked in the circle. However the New Zealand goalkeeper was up to the task and blocked the shot.

Despite Australia being unable to score from these opportunities it was evident that the momentum of the game had changed and it was now the Hockeyroos in control.

Some individual efforts of brilliance from the likes of Megan Rivers and Jayde Taylor continued to lift Australia’s spirits, eventually gaining the ascendency when a deflection from Kobie McGurk found its way to Ashleigh Nelson who made no mistake from close range to give Australia the lead.

A much more intense team after half time, the Hockeyroos continued to hunt for goals, with the continual pressure on the circle and determination to follow up on every loose ball resulting in goals to Shelly Liddelow and another to Nelson.

They will now take to their next match against Germany full of confidence.

“I think (the Germany game) is something that the team is looking forward to. We knew that it could come down to this game to make the final. The fact that a draw won’t help us due to the goal difference means that we will have to be a bit more attacking but our goal was to make it to the finals so this is another step in doing that,” said Hockeyroos captain Madonna Blyth.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said he was pleased with the way Australia made the most of their second half opportunities.

“I think both teams definitely made plenty of opportunities and fortunately we were the team that was able to convert in the second half. I think the first half was very open with end to end stuff and it probably took its toll on a few players and certainly by the end there were some very tired players,” said Murray.

Victorian Hockeyroo, Rachael Lynch, reports from Argentina:

Hello everybody,

Well, what a night. Another game and a really great win. 4-1 over the Kiwis which felt sooo good! Tonight was all about revenge so I think we all came out with that little bit extra motivation.

The first half was very up and back and we had a lot of exhausted girls at half time. The Kiwis scored early but we managed to snatch one back and head into half time 1-1. I'm sure Matt will tell you that the highlight of the first half was the catch he took in the crowd when a ball sprayed up into the grandstand. Haha, he got a pretty good cheer for it.

Second half was another tight battle but we pulled through with some great goals to close the game out. Again I had very little to do in goals but today it was more to do with some great defending happening in front of me. Can't complain.

Oh and if anyone wants to look at photos from the tournament - www.treebyimages.com.au or www.dcimages.org

Rach

Teneal Attard ACL injury blow

05 September 2010

The Hockeyroos have been dealt a blow to their current World Cup and Commonwealth Games campaigns, today confirming that key defender Teneal Attard had ruptured her ACL during last night’s World Cup match against the Netherlands in Argentina.

The Hockeyroos have been dealt a blow to their current World Cup and Commonwealth Games campaigns, today confirming that key defender Teneal Attard had ruptured her ACL during last night’s World Cup match against the Netherlands in Argentina.

The news is particularly devastating for Attard, as it is her third ACL injury, having only returned to the squad 12 months ago from a separate ACL injury on her left knee.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said that while losing Attard is disappointing for the team, it will give others an opportunity to step up at the World Cup.

“It is obviously disappointing for Teneal, on a personal basis it will be her third ACL, and this was her good knee so obviously it is quite devastating for her. In terms of the World Cup it means that we are one short in the defensive area but we have brought away four people in her position and we use three during a game so that means the other three will get more of a chance to play there,” said Murray.

Murray said that Attard still remained a chance to be part of the 2012 London Olympics squad and that captain Madonna Blyth may go back in defence to cover the loss of Attard.

“When she gets back into Perth she will get it operated on and hopefully in the next 12 months, or even sooner, get back on track and is still a chance for the London Olympics. Whether we play Madonna Blyth back there is another aspect but it will mean that the others get more of a chance to play,” said Murray.

Now one player short for the remainder of the World Cup, the Hockeyroos currently sit third on the points table however are still in contention to make the semi finals, with crucial matches to come against New Zealand (8.30am EST Monday 6 September) and Germany (8.30am EST Wednesday 8 September).

Their next match against New Zealand will be particularly crucial, with the Hockeyroos needing to at least get a draw to stay in touch for the semi finals.

“They (points against New Zealand) are points that before we came we expected to get but we know that it’s not going to be easy. They have a very good team, a very quick and competent forward area and they play quite an aggressive style of hockey as they have done at the Champions Trophy and here as well. So they have made plenty of opportunities, they have leaked some goals at the other end but they are always a threat to score goals against you. We have to be tight and make sure we are up to their pace but equally we need to convert the opportunities that we get at the other end,” said Murray.

Penalty corners undo good work by Hockeyroos

04 September 2010

Netherlands 4 Hockeyroos 1 (2-1 half time)

Goals - Ned Paumen 10m PC/ 34m PC/ 40m PC, Aus Arrold24m PC, Ned Smeets-smabers 46m FG

Giving award soft penalty corners has cost the Hockeyroos dearly during their World Cup match against the Netherlands, taking it up to the world number 1 team but eventually going down 4-1 in Argentina.

With the Netherlands scoring three of their four goals from penalty corners, that proved to be the difference in the match in which the scoreboard didn’t reflect the evenness of the game.

The Hockeyroos played good hockey in patches however their goal scoring potency was once again tested.

Coming into the match having won their first two games, the Hockeyroos started the match full of confidence and took it up to their higher ranked opponents.

Knowing a win would go a long way in securing a spot in the semi finals, Australia were very aggressive early, with quick passes and constant movement placing the Dutch defence under pressure.

However the Netherlands soon demonstrated why they are the number 1 ranked team in the world, scoring a goal against the run of play to take the lead at the 10 minute mark.

Australia showed resilience to not be rattled and stuck to their game plan, continuing to attack and produce some excellent forward movement.

However they were dealt a blow when key defender Teneal Attard went down with a serious knee injury, leaving the Hockeyroos one player down.

Australia continued to push on and were eventually rewarded for their hard work with Nicole Arrold executing a well worked penalty corner to level the game at the 24 minute mark.

The Hockeyroos continued to have the momentum, however conceded another penalty corner goal one minute before half time, disappointing Australia who were perhaps the better team up until that point.

The second half started in complete contrast to the first, with the Netherlands demonstrating their skill to score another penalty corner to extend their lead.

Although there was still plenty of time remaining and the Hockeyroos continued to play well, avenues to goal appeared limited, particularly due to the tight Netherlands defence.

After Australia conceded another goal at the 46 minute mark the Netherlands had established an unbeatable lead, with the Hockeyroos continuing to fight out the match to no avail.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said his team were made to pay the price for giving away soft penalty corners.

“In the end the penalty corners were the difference, it was disappointing from our point of view, but if you give away soft penalty corners to supposedly one of the best in the world, they are going to score goals and you can’t afford to do that,” said Murray.

Murray said that while the team still had some improvement left, he believes they are still capable of making the semi finals.

“I’m obviously disappointed today, I thought our first half we played reasonably well but our second half was not so good, and I dont know if our first two games we played as good as we are capable of playing. In the end we have New Zealand and Germany (to play) and we can still make the finals but I think if we can play to our ability we can win both of our remaining games, so we will remain focused on doing that,” said Murray

The Hockeyroos now sit third in their pool but are still well in contention for a semi final berth, with a win during their next match against New Zealand on Monday 6 September a vital to their chances.
