Greensborough have defeated Mentone 2 – 1 today in the Women’s Premier League grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. Lucy Ockenden played an integral role for Greensborough and received the Player of the Match award.
In a repeat of last year’s grand final third placed Greensborough were going for a record third consecutive title. Finishing the season on top of the ladder, Mentone’s Jackie Jones opened the scoring in the 18th minute taking advantage of a well-structured penalty corner.
However, celebrations were cut short with Greensborough’s second corner allowing Katie Burns to level up the scores.
Mentone’s defense was being pushed as they conceded four penalty corners for the half. But even after the onslaught both teams went into the half-time break 1 – 1.
The second half began with Mentone enjoying more time in possession. That was until Greensborough’s Tegan de Man put them in front with a superb strike.
With Greensborough leading 2 – 1 Mentone started to alter their line-up with a number of substitutions. Greensborough looked more composed in possession until two penalty corners in three minutes were awarded to Mentone.
As Mentone continued to mount a challenge late in the game the Greensborough defense held strong and negated the Mentone attack. Greensborough went on to win their third consecutive title but had to do it the hard way against a gallant Mentone team.
